HIV/AIDS EDUCATION
The Red Cross, working in partnership with the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, educates people on how to stop the
transmission of HIV, encourages people to respond in informed ways to
people who have HIV, and helps people apply the facts about HIV to their
own behavior. These goals are accomplished through our educational
programs.
Basic HIV/AIDS Program

Our Basic HIV/AIDS Program helps people take steps to prevent the
spread of HIV. Basic HIV/AIDS Program: Fundamentals provides the
opportunity to openly discuss the facts about HIV and AIDS and
personalize the facts so they become more meaningful. It's a good way to
encourage people to adopt prevention behaviors to protect themselves and
others from HIV. Basic HIV/AIDS Program: Prevention Skills can help
people develop and practice skills that they can use in real life
situations to protect themselves and others from HIV.
African American HIV/AIDS Program

While African Americans account for an estimated 13
percent of the U.S. population, the CDC reports that 37 percent of all
people diagnosed with AIDS through December 1999 in the United States
are African Americans. Help young people learn and apply the facts
about HIV and AIDS and develop effective decision-making skills (video,
workbook, and leader’s guide).
Hispanic HIV/AIDS Program
The
American Red Cross Hispanic HIV/AIDS Program is a culturally specific
program developed in Spanish by Hispanics. This bilingual program (it is
also available in English) is based on the philosophy of Brazilian
educator Paulo Freire, which emphasizes plática or dialogue. This
learning method encourages an exchange of ideas and experiences within a
group to empower them. Our culturally-specific program is designed
based on values, beliefs, and concerns that are likely to be common to
the diverse Hispanic population in the United States. Messages are
constructed based on these commonalities so that course activities are
grounded in real-life experiences. This program was created based on
languages, customs, family relationships, spirituality, sexuality and
health beliefs of Hispanic and Latino communities.
Workplace HIV/AIDS Program
The American Red Cross has long been valued by businesses as a
trusted source of health and safety training and education. Our program
helps maintain a supportive and productive work environment for everyone
and helps businesses meet the need for reliable, factual information
about HIV and AIDS.
