What
is the Language Bank?
The American Red Cross of Northwest New Jersey Language Bank is a group of people who speak another
language in addition to English and are willing to volunteer their time as
an interpreter or translator to help their community.
Why
is the Language Bank Needed?
Our communities are becoming much more culturally diverse. Not
everyone speaks English or is able to communicate with the social service
providers they may need. The Language Bank will provide confidential, no
cost telephone or in-person interpretation or translation.
How
often will I be called?
Most people get called a few times a year. When a request is received
(either from the Red Cross Disaster dispatcher or another social service
agency) the Language Bank Director will call and "match" the
right volunteer with the service provider.
How
do I sign up?
Call the American Red Cross of Northwest New Jersey and ask for the Language Bank Director.
After a brief phone interview, you will be asked to attend a Language Bank
Volunteer Orientation (approximately 2 hours) to better understand your
role with the American Red Cross and learn about the responsibilities of a
language Bank Volunteer.

This course is designed to help bridge the language barrier
in and around our community during times of disaster. Help us to help
others by being a bilingual volunteer and enable our partner organizations
to provide service across the many cultures of our community.

Lifeline,
Personal Emergency Response System, is offered to the community through
the American Red Cross and other health care providers. This service is a
recent addition to the programs offered through the Red Cross but remains
consistent with the chapter’s mission to help people respond to
emergencies by summoning help at the touch of a button. Lifeline service
is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The American Red Cross of Northwest New Jersey bridges the gap between
Lifeline and subscriber by providing installation services and training.
Volunteers provide reassurance as subscribers recognize a need for
assistance to remain in the home.

FDR
was in the White House, a cup of coffee was 20 cents, radio was king and
the world was at war. Red Cross Roll Call is available free of
charge to retirement communities, community groups, schools and historical
societies. This 20 minute program features uniforms, photos and music of
the World War II years. A narrator relates stories that will bring back
memories of this time to many and bring the era to life for others. Each
attendee receives a souvenir newsletter filled with more memories of those
years and the volunteers who served with the American Red Cross of
Northwest New Jersey.
