Disaster
relief assistance is provided free to individuals and families whose
lives are impacted by disasters. American Red Cross seeks to provide
assistance in dealing with the immediate emergency needs brought on by
disaster. The following are aspects of the disaster services program:
Emergency
relief to meet the urgent needs to disasters victims in the form of
shelter, food, medical needs, and bulk distribution of supplies to
large numbers of people.
Emergency
assistance to meet the urgent needs of disaster victims in the form of
food, clothing, lodging, medical needs, crisis intervention, basic
household furnishings, rent or minor home repairs. Disaster relief is
given on the basis of verified need using uniform guidelines.
The American Red Cross of Northwest New Jersey provides 24-hour a day,
7-day a week response to disaster emergencies for all residents in the
55 communities of our service area. Morris and Warren County residents
face the potential for many types of natural disasters including fire,
river flooding, flash flooding, hazardous materials incidents,
transportation incidents, explosions, utility problems, dam flooding,
winter storms, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, heat wave, building
collapse, mine collapse, civil disorder, wildfire, hurricane,
earthquake, drought, epidemic, terrorism, crowd crush, famine and
nuclear strike. Trained volunteers are also available to help
individuals and families deal with the emotional stress of a disaster
through disaster mental health.
The
potential for disaster in both frequency and intensity is increasing
across the nation following weather pattern changes. Morris and Warren Counties
are
also impacted by these changes. therefore, the potential for a
disaster such as Hurricane Floyd to impact our area will continue to
increase. The effects will be multiplied as the population rises and
road and building construction is further developed.
Comprehensive
planning including a disaster plan, shelter sites, vendor agreements,
operation procedures and agreement with local government and other
organizations active during disasters.
Community
disaster education and preparedness to assist individuals and families
with disaster planning and emergency family preparedness. Special
emphasis is given to populations considered to be at greatest risk
during a disaster: elderly, individuals with disabilities (physical,
mental and developmental), children, low income individuals and
commuters. Education includes addressing the types of disaster for
which Morris and Warren County residents are most vulnerable.
